The Effect of TikTok

Since 2017, TikTok  has completely taken over the youth of India. The youth is all gaga over the highly-addictive application.

TikTok is a short-form, video-sharing app that allows users to create and share 15-second videos, on any topic. It was formerly called musical.ly, but it was later taken over by a Chinese company ByteDance and its users were moved to Tik Tok. The influence and impact of TikTok has reached beyond our imagination. It has now amassed 500 million active users, up until Feb, 2019. A lot of celebrities have started endorsing Tiktok, and they also make use of other social media apps like Instagram & Facebook to promote Tiktok. It gained prominence owing to the alluring and competitive challenges that it made. The users, with the help of these challenges, gain more attention which result in more follower. This over-the-night and easy fame has become the underlining reason, as to why myriad of people are turning their heads towards Tiktok.
Although majority of the youth community have praised and taken their hats off to Tiktok, there are many others who have disdained it. The Tamil Nadu government is keen on banning the app in their state and also from the entire nation. This comes after few fatal incidents were reported due to the usage of Tiktok. A 24 year old man committed suicide due to criticism faced over his gender on Tiktok. The app got into the public attention, when Tiktok initiated the #kikichallenge, where users were expected to hop out of the car, in moving traffic and dance along with the pace of the car to ‘In My Feeling’ by Drake. This challenge faced severe flack by Hyderabad Traffic Police.

 Eminent Tiktok users, like Awez Darbar (1.2) have decided to make their professions out of Tiktok. They may get bestowed with fandom & money in life but don’t you think it will take a toll on the future of the nation? They’ll be influencing the lives of others to a great extent. They’ll become the opinion leaders and start inspiring them to what they are doing. With this, the entire nation will head into abyss. So far, the admonishments of banning Tiktok have got overlooked by the users, but when it will get banned in reality. A lot of tantrums will be thrown by the users. Until then, let’s introspect our choices and actions.
