ICC Cricket World Cup- 2019: Preview

ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP- 2019: PREVIEW

Just over a month to go and the 12th edition of ICC World Cup is going to kick start, with the host nation taking on the Proteas, on 30th May, at The Oval. This will be the 5th instance of a World Cup being hosted in England, and for the first time in the history, it will be only played by 10 nations which includes India, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, West Indies, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the hosts, England.

The host nation will start the campaign for the most coveted trophy as the favourites, along with the Men in Blue. But one must not underestimate the competition that teams like Pakistan and West Indies bring to the table. And then of course, the defending champions, Australia, entering the campaign on a series win each, in India and Pakistan, will look to defend the title and add one more feather to their hat, which already includes five such trophies.

The highlight would definitely be the favourites entering the campaign, on the back of series losses, with the hosts losing to West Indies and India losing to Australia. Yet, they look like the most balanced team on paper and are the ones to look out for, in the tournament, especially England, after a shocking exit in the previous World Cup. This is their best chance to create history and lift their first World Cup.

One must also be varying of the threat that a nation like Afghanistan brings to the table and this definitely raises a question mark over limiting the World Cup to ten nations, as it is a backward step for the development of the game. This World Cup will also be the last of many  legends of the game like M.S. Dhoni, Chris Gayle, Imran Tahir, J.P. Duminy, etc. For almost a month and a half, the ten nations will ply their trade and after forty-eight matches, the game will get its new champion on 14th July, 2019, at the Mecca of Cricket. May the best team win!
